Mood Disorders Diary
This is the single best analytical tool for the both diagnosis and
treatment. Actually it’s the only complete management utility.
Periodically I offer training in setting up the longitudinal monitoring.
I eventually stop because nobody bothers to do it. Well, one
person did use it long term; several other people have done used
it a short time, usually the day before their next appointment.
When the mood diary is kept up, a patient with Bipolar disorder
realizes an accelerated treatment process and has a breakthrough
awareness of the ramifications of their illness. Years of struggling
with mood and anxiety swings often leave a patient completely
ignorant of their illness and course.
In conclusion, the longitudinal mood history pioneered by Robert
Post,MD, in the late 1980s is very useful.
